Houston Has A Gay Mayor

Houston became the largest U.S. city to elect an openly gay mayor, with voters handing a solid victory to City Controller Annise Parker after a hotly contested runoff. Parker defeated former city attorney Gene Locke with 53.6 percent of the vote Saturday in a race that had a turnout of only 16.5 percent. And?

Of course those who call themselves Christians, especially Bible Belt fundamentalists would say that this is an abomination and against the Bible. I suspect they’ll follow up with Houston is next for a Katrina-like hurricane!  :-(

Well, the Bible also paints a picture of God who approves murder, the plunder of war, the smashing of the heads of babies against rocks, women as second rate citizens, and slavery. I don’t believe those are acts of God either. But much of our society still treats people with AIDS like the Bible says they did for those with LEPROSY. You see, the cause of leprosy was the PUNISHMENT of God. Of course they didn’t know what the CAUSE of leprosy was 2,000 years ago.

Today we know that leprosy comes from a microorganism known as microbacterium leprae.

Todya we also know that those people who are described as GAY have a different physical brain characteristics than those who are not gay. That notwithstanding, what is clear is that we’re called to LOVE people- everyone! Even more importantly, we’re called to love people as Jesus loved us (unto death?). So, regardless of what your “political position” might be (liberal, conservative, Democrat, or Republican),  Houston has a GAY mayor. And I am sure that there are many MALES that still can’t handle a FEMALE being the head of anything, but that’s the way it is, and it’s not like Annise is our first female mayor after all.

But, Annise Parker’s rise to mayor is drawing attention from national news outlets who are noting the significance of the nation’s fourth largest city making history by electing an openly gay leader. The press loves controversy!   :-)

As a spiritual-futurist, I have a BA degree majoring in history. One cannot know the future without knowing the past which holds clues to what is on the horizon. The world is in such a rapid expansion of knowledge that we are close to entering a tipping point that will forever change earth as we know it.
